Explorations of Farm’s members in Andalusia, Brazil, Slovakia and Brussels in 2001–2013. The fascinating experience gained by the company members at various places while exploring foreign cultures and themes within the period of 12 years is presented in the following short films: Andalusian Experience, Expedition Eastern Slovakia, To the Heart of Brazil, Infiltration of Brussels. Farm’s artists enter fields they haven’t known before and meet people who give them their stories, songs, rhythms and dance steps, thus becoming a part of their lives.

THE THEATRE

performance, New Stage of National Theatre

A game for actors and spectators which can overpower its own players, a game that no one can escape. The production is based on the breathtaking vitality of rhythms and dance steps of Afro-Brazilian slaves. A comedians’ company keeps staging a play about the resurrection of a bull in a world where culture is dying. With its Capitão and Vaqueiro, the grotesque community of actors is confronted with the world of consumers; spectators with whom they are constantly fighting. What happens when one loses one’s cultural identity, thus losing a source of vitality and a sense of life?
This performance, ironically entitled “The Theatre”is like a black mass, which violates the boundary between those who are watching and those who are giving.

Under the feet of the dancers, out of the stamping of their steps, the eyes of ancient African gods come alive, the prayers of their Brazilian offspring can be heard, and our innermost thoughts awaken as well.“ Julie Kočí, Dance Zone

The “Lorca” project was the first attempt of V. Dočolomanský to create a production outside a mainstream theater institution as well as an attempt to form his own company. The origination of the production was preceded by a journey to Andalusia based on the poetry of F. G. Lorca, a search for the hidden facts of his life and an exploration of the cultural terrain he grew up in. At the time it was staged, the production met with a huge response and opened the doors to numerous global festivals for the company.

What lies beneath the marketing created images of the corporations whose products we consume daily? The desire to discover what is “behind” this and to inform the world about it led a young group of activists to collect concealed information, and to uncover the criminal practices of a multinational concern. They came to understand that they could not break free from this corporation’s influence. But after what they had discovered they couldn’t simply go on as before. What to do? And “who is” this corporation against whom they are fighting?

Due to their message, Whistleblowers are unbearably disturbing and thus immensely refreshing and much needed on the Czech theater stage.” Jakub Novák, Taneční zóna

Video samples from the workshops and trainings of Farm in the Cave performers.
In the course of twelve years, members of Farm in the Cave have formed their own way of working with concentration, expression of the body and the voice as well as the method of passing their experience on to others. They have learned from masters of cultures that are now gradually dying to transmit precious human experience without words, by sharing here and now. The methods of the studio raise the curiosity of experts as well as the lay public; the workshops are open to professional performers as well as to artists working in other fields. The two films will look into the daily practices of Farmers and their workshops.

Memory versus the presence of a place – the railway station Zilina-Zariecie; from here, Jews from the Slovak State were deported during the second world war. In the waiting-room, a place in-between, „accidental“ travellers meet and the dead return, not by accident.
With special guest Charlottou Öfverholm.

In the hallucinatory pictures, where the dead meet the alive, past shame lasciviously rubs against present shame. A masterfully and deeply dug finger in the wound of collective (un)memory!“ Jana Návratová, Reflex

Sclavi – Song of an Emigrant

performance, La Fabrika

After several years, an anonymous gastarbeiter returns from America to his village in Slovakia. His place is taken. The emigrant´s effort to fit in the imagined gap back „here“ fuse with his memories of attempts to participate in the community „over there“. The rupture in the inability to be fully there where he is, and „bare life“ as the emigrant experiences it does not mean only life without any social rights and identity, reduced to material needs, but mainly life without soul, without any network of relationships.
The scenic composition draws on old Ruthenian songs, letters from emigration and Karel Čapek´s Hordubal. The production unfolds in a feverish pace, with melodies of polyphonic songs being pierced by raw physical actions.

Farm in the Cave has managed to create conditions which theater historians always speak about with nostalgia - reminiscent of antique theater, Grotowsky’s theater, theater of all times and societies to whom has been granted a unity of professed values shared on both sides of the ramp…“ Malgorzata Jabloňska, Didaskalia 67/68

Daniel Abreu: Perro (ESP)

taneční performance, Experimental Space NoD

The guest of Farm in the Cave and NoD experimental space Daniel Abreu ranks among top European dancers and choreographers. He founded his own dance group in Madrid and cooperates with many companies across Europe. In Prague, he will introduce his solo project Perro.
The whole story is narrated on an empty stage on which, for the moment, there is room for only one person. One person who, like everyone else, has been created by physical and emotional accidents.
Perro (Dog) is well known to be man’s best friend, however, this Perro is halfway between wild and tame, trusting and mad. Here there is space for the incongruous taken through impulse and intuition.

In Perro he reaches such a level of synthesis and complexity, simplicity and brutality, I have seen in very few performances.” Adolfo Simón, n° 81 de la Revista Por la Danza

JHow the elements of expressions in a given culture can be transformed to the actor’s training first and then to the bodily messages. The workshop will offer the practical exercises Farm in the Cave´s actors go through during the creation of the performance, for which the ’farmers‘ became a new school of working with the expression.
